Donovan Mitchell injury update: Jazz star in ‘good shape’ after tweaking ankle vs. Clippers

Donovan Mitchell seems to have survived yet another injury scare.

In the fourth quarter of the Clippers’ 132-106 win over the Jazz on Saturday, Mitchell appeared to tweak his right ankle on a drive to the basket. The two-time All-Star elevated toward the rim with ease but was in visible discomfort as he landed.

Mitchell then immediately called for a substitution and could be seen on the ABC broadcast limping into the tunnel.

He did eventually walk back to Utah’s bench area and had a brief conversation with Jazz coach Quin Snyder. The team’s medical staff cleared him to return, but Mitchell did not re-enter the game with Los Angeles holding a double-digit lead. As the final buzzer sounded, Mitchell headed back to the locker room with his right foot wrapped in ice.

“He’s in good shape,” Snyder said after Game 3. “He could have gone back in the game.”

During his postgame media availability, Mitchell, who took a hard hit from Clippers forward Paul George in Game 2 but insisted he was “fine,” offered a similar response.

“I’m good. That’s all I got for you,” Mitchell said. “I’m good. It happened. The situation happened. I feel like I was able to go back, but no need to risk it down 16, 18 at that point. So, I’ll be fine. . . . It’s when I land. It’s been just trying to manage it. I don’t really know what else to tell you. I don’t want to say too much, though. It was just the landing, but I’m good. I’ll be ready for Game 4.”

Mitchell finished with 30 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals in 32 minutes. The Jazz and Clippers will meet again for Game 4 of their Western Conference semifinal series on Monday night.
