Dragon Ball Creator’s New Film Sand Land Releases New Trailer, All Details Here

The Sand Land anime film by Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama is set to release in cinemas in Japan this year. Based on the manga by the Toriyama, the film adaptation received a new trailer which shows what fans can expect from his next project.

While Akira Toriyama is known for his work on the main Dragon Ball action series and other franchises such as Dr. Slump, he also has several other works under his belt that were serialized in Jump magazines.

Sand Land, a lesser known manga of his, has only one volume, and it had its eight chapters ran from May to August 2000 in Weekly Shonen Jump. Even though the manga is so short, the “Sand Land Project” was teased back in December 2022 by Bandai Namco, along with a teaser trailer.

The Sand Land film will be produced by Sunrise, Kamikaze Douga, and Anima. It will be directed by Toshihisa Yokoshima, with Hayashi Mori providing the script and Yugo Kanno composing the music. Sand Land is currently slated for release in Japanese cinemas on August 18, 2023. It is not known currently if the film will get an international release.

What is Sand Land about?

Akira Toriyama’s story is set in the future where Earth is destroyed by war, and is now a barren wasteland. Water is a scarce resource which is controlled by a corrupt king. An elderly Sheriff Rao and the Prince of Demons Beelzebub and his guardian Thief are teamed up to find the source of the water in the desert.

They face hurdles during their journey through the desert, and encounter other characters. The story of these characters as well as their journey to fight against greed will be adapted in the film.

Akira Toriyama’s comments on Sand Land

The Dragon Ball creator’s comments on the website reveal that he was surprised that he drew Sand Land all on his own, without using the help of any assistants.

Toriyama also said that he prefers to draw subtle and light content in his manga, but he still managed to add in some serious themes into Sand Land’s story.

On a humorous note, Toriyama revealed that he has hardly draws any manga any more because he lost his wooden pen handle. Sand Land was made by scanning in the inked paper manuscripts and using software to fill in the colours with Toriyama, then adding in the tones. Toriyama revealed that he lost his wooden pen handle that he had been using since before his debut, which he carved and sanded using a knife and sandpaper. It had become perfectly moulded to his hand over a long period of time. The new pen handles just didn’t feel the same to him, and he has used this as an excuse to hardly draw any manga since then.

Toriyama concluded by saying that people who are excited for Sand Land’s release are true fans, as the manga came out 23 years ago. While he has only seen unfinished footage of the film, Toriyama said he can already feel that the production quality is high, and called the adaptation a dream coming true for him.
