Duke basketball arrest: Coach K’s grandson, Paolo Banchero face charges related to DWI

Two Duke men’s basketball players face charges stemming from an arrest for suspected driving while impaired Sunday morning.

The two players involved are Michael Savarino, grandson of coach Mike Krzyzewski, and star freshman Paolo Banchero. Savarino was charged with DWI, driving after consuming alcohol under the age of 21 and a stop sign violation. Banchero faces a charge of aiding and abetting DWI, but was released at the site of the traffic stop.

The incident was first reported by the The (Raleigh) News & Observer on Tuesday.

According to reports, Savarino was stopped for a stop sign violation at 1:10 a.m. on Sunday morning and showed signs of impairment. After submitting to a breathalyzer, Savarino had a blood alcohol level of .08. 

He’s due in court on Dec. 9, while Banchero is slated to appear in court on Dec. 8.

“We are reviewing a legal matter involving two members of the men’s basketball team,” Krzyzewski said in a statement released by Duke athletics to the News & Observer. “Any further actions as a result of this situation will ultimately be determined by the Vice President/Director of Athletics and University officials.”

The Blue Devils’ next game is Tuesday against Gardner Webb and Savarino and Banchero’s status is unknown. Duke is 3-0 and ranks No. 7 in the country.
