E3 was once the go to annual event for gamers all around the globe. This was the event where everything went down, and every major player from the gaming industry showcased their upcoming projects at E3. However, E3 was last held online back in 2021 and since then the event has sort of disappeared from the face of the Earth, as the big players are either hosting their own events or taking part in others like the Summer Game Fest.
Many have blamed Geoff Keighley for the death of E3 as the event has been experiencing a downfall since Keighley parted with them in 2020. His reason for separating with them was the pandemic, but that was also the year when he started his own gaming event, called Summer Game Fest. Keighley was recently asked about his reputation as “the E3 Killer” during a VGC podcast, who responded with some interesting answers.
Keighley states that he thinks E3 was responsible for killing itself and he understands why people would think that Summer Game Fest is responsible for killing the event. Keighley added that the reason why he created Summer Game Fest was because he saw E3’s “wheels falling off the wagon.”
Keighley also spoke about his past with E3 and how it has been a major part of his life since he was a teenager. Keighley has visited every E3 show since 1995 and it was the event that “defined” his summers. He also spoke about how heartbreaking it was to see this special part of his life fall apart. He thought that the event’s relevancy and participation problems were the main reasons for its downfall.
When asked if Keighley saw E3 ever as competition, he stated that when he pulled out, he started the Summer Game Fest from his bedroom and had no idea what he was doing in 2020. E3 was cancelled that year and it later returned as a digital event in 2021. However since then we haven’t seen any E3 events, therefore Keighley never saw them as competitors to the Summer Game Fest.
