Ederson nearly takes Man City ace Sergio Gomez’s head off with confetti cannon
Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson narrowly avoided hitting Sergio Gomez’s head with a confetti-spraying cannon during Monday’s celebratory open-top bus parade through the city centre. The newly-crowned European kings sealed a historic treble by beating Inter Milan in the Champions League final over the weekend, which followed their recent triumphs in the Premier League and the FA Cup.
An open-top bus parade took place on Monday evening to allow City fans to celebrate with their heroes in Manchester, with thousands of people lining the streets to catch a glimpse of the greatest team in the club’s long and storied history. The parade was initially scheduled to begin at 6.30pm, although it was ultimately delayed by around 30 minutes as a result of inclement weather.
Ederson was at the heart of the celebrations after the parade finally got going but was slightly too eager to let off a confetti cannon as the bus rolled through the city centre, with the Brazilian stopper narrowly missing the head of Gomez as he attempted to fire into the crowd. It caused Gomez to duck before putting his hands up to protect his face as he recovered from the initial shock, although it seemed as though he managed to emerge unscathed.
The incident, which was captured on video and posted to Twitter, came two days after Ederson produced a brilliant performance to help City wrap up their maiden Champions League title by edging past Inter Milan in the final. The 29-year-old pulled off a string of fine saves to protect his clean sheet as the clock ticked down, with Rodri’s second-half goal proving to be the difference over the course of the match in Istanbul.

Ederson was in the right place at the right time to deny Inter forward Romelu Lukaku a point-blank header just moments before the final whistle, with his crucial save prompting a shocked reaction from BT Sport co-commentator Steve McManaman as he attempted to sum up what he had just witnessed.
“Oh my word,” he began. “I don’t know he even knew he saved it, I think it just bounced off his leg. Lukaku with the header back from [Robin] Gosens, point-blank range. How has he missed this? It’s just bounced off his knee. That is incredible. How has he not scored from there, Lukaku? What a moment for him in an Inter shirt.”
Ederson went on to post an emotional message on Instagram as he tried to find the right words to describe his thoughts and feelings after City’s historic Champions League triumph. He wrote: “Finally I was able to enjoy this dreamed cup, after years of frustration of crying, sadness.
“Finally we were able to enjoy this much desired cup. All honour and glory be given to you Lord, thank you for showing the way and for empowering the whole team. Undoubtedly the most exciting title of my career and we follow for more.”
