Eli Manning creates awkward Manningcast moment when discussing Fab Melo with Draymond Green
The “Monday Night Football” Manningcast of the Rams-49ers game featured an awkward moment as the discussion turned to Draymond Green and the 2012 NBA Draft.
Roughly midway through Green’s appearance on the show, Peyton Manning asked whether it was true that the Warriors star, who went No. 35 overall in his draft, could name each of the players taken in front of him. The three-time NBA All-Star and champion quickly rattled off several names before Manning stopped him.

Eventually, the ESPN2 broadcast brought up a list of each of the players taken in front of Green, including one Fab Melo, who went No. 22 overall to the Celtics.
That’s when Eli Manning quipped, “Fab Melo? Where did he play?” That created a brief pause before Green responded, “Fab Melo was the Celtics.” That then prompted the younger Manning to ask whether Melo was still playing. Green responded, “Nah, he’s — God rest his soul” before the talks quickly returned to football.

Here’s a brief clip of the segment:
Melo, who played two seasons under Jim Boeheim at Syracuse, died Feb. 11, 2017, at age 26. Then a player with the Brazilian basketball team Club Athletico Paulistano of the Novo Basquete Brasil, Melo died in his home in Juiz de Fora. He went to sleep and was discovered dead the next morning by his mother. His autopsy report indicated he died of a heart attack.

It was an unfortunate, awkward moment on what was a mostly forgettable Manningcast, one that clearly originated from Eli Manning not knowing Melo had died. Perhaps that’s why Peyton Manning was so quick to interject and move the discussion back to the play at hand.
