Eli Roth’s Borderlands Film Heads to Theaters Summer 2024

The recent trend of video game movies marches ever onwards, and one particular film we’ve been hearing bits and bobs about for quite a while now has finally cemented a release date: Eli Roth’s take on Borderlands is headed to theaters on August 9, 2024.

This news came out of San Diego Comic Con this week, and sadly, we didn’t get a trailer or any new images to tide us over while we wait a year. We did, however, get the tiniest bit more plot summary: Borderlands will star Cate Blanchett as Lilith, a treasure hunter who return to Pandora to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Edgar Ramirez). She joins up with Roland (Kevin Hart), Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), Krieg (Florian Munteanu), Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), and of course, the robotic sidekick Claptrap played by Jack Black. Together, they look for the girl while fighting off monsters and bandits and uncovering a greater power behind it all.

Roth is serving as both director and writer, and no, Roth did not get replaced with Deadpool’s Tim Miller earlier this year (Miller was just handling some reshoots while Roth was busy).

So far, we’ve only seen the tiniest bits of the Borderlands film, including a glimpse of Claptrap and a brief first look at CinemaCon 2022. The executive producer of the Borderlands games, Randy Pitchford, also showed off a set visit back in 2021. Borderlands the movie has been chugging along since 2015 and has seen reports of a troubled production, most recently with the removal of The Last of Us’ Craig Mazin from the film’s writing credits. We looked into the removal, and Mazin confirmed he “cannot claim any kind of authorship of Borderlands” despite having been previously announced as a co-writer. The reasons behind this change remain unclear.
