Emma Raducanu makes Wimbledon title declaration ahead of return

Emma Raducanu has revealed that winning Wimbledon is her biggest career goal while admitting she wouldn’t swap her US Open win for the world No 1 spot. Raducanu has been back on the practice courts preparing for the claycourt season following her first-round exit at the Miami Masters.

She’s set to return to action at the Stuttgart Open later this month, where she has been granted a main draw wildcard. But Raducanu’s main target appears to be getting herself best prepared for the Wimbledon Championships this summer.

It was back in 2021 when she burst onto the scene at Wimbledon and became the youngest British female to reach the fourth round in the Open Era. She was unable to repeat that feat last year, losing to Caroline Garcia in the second round.

However, the British slam clearly remains Raducanu’s main target for her second major title. During a Q&A session with her fans on social media, one person asked: “What Grand Slam do you want next?”

Instead of writing down her answer, Raducanu replied simply with a picture of the pristine grass court at Wimbledon. The 20-year-old also indicated that her US Open title win matters more to her than becoming world No 1.

One followed asked her: “Win a slam or number 1 in the world?” Raducanu then replied with a cartoon picture of her win from the 2021 US Open, holding the trophy in her arms.

The British tennis star has been forced to play a reduced schedule this season having struggled with illness and injuries. But she has shown signs of improvement in recent weeks with a career-best showing at Indian Wells before losing a close match against Bianca Andreescu in Miami.

And Laura Robson believes the British No 1 can head into the claycourt season with confidence. “I actually think she’s pretty good on clay anyway,” Robson said.

“Last year she went into the season thinking ‘it’s just going to be a bit of a learning experience for me’. You could tell that she was trying new things on the clay court, trying to add a little bit more spin to her forehand side.”
