Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney has apparently defended Twitter against the “Block the Blue” campaign supporters on the social media platform. Sweeney didn’t hold back in his statements against the campaigners, who he feels are “losers and gooners.”
For those unaware, Elon Musk’s Twitter has finally removed legacy verification checks on the platform. This effectively removes everyone’s blue tick checkmarks on the platform except for those who are paying $8 a month for the new Twitter Blue subscription.
An online community like this should be a meritocracy, where everyone has an equal chance, and merit is earned rather than anointed by a corporation. Old school Twitter had found a great expression of merit with following & retweeting. The best rose to the top.

This new subscription model has started a campaign amongst a section of Twitter users called Block the Blue campaign, which basically means that some people are blocking every account that has a blue tick verification.
This boycott movement’s idea stemmed from dril’s tweet last year. He said that he’ll “absolutely block on sight” anyone who has subscribed to Twitter Blue. He is one of the most-known Twitter users on the platform, with 1.8 million subscribers.
you just paid $8 to eat my ass stupid #BlockTheBlue

That one tweet snowballed and gave rise to the Block the Blue campaign. There’s even a Chrome extension that will auto-block any Twitter Blue subscriber on a person’s feed.
Amidst all this, Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney has given his opinion on the matter. He took to Twitter (of course) to share his thoughts.
Sweeney tweeted that the campaigners are like the “cool kids from junior high who worked to exclude we nerds from cool kid events, plus the losers who joined in to gain cred. The elite-only verification system sucked, been criticizing it since 2018.”
This was followed by waves of Twitter employees realizing they’d been granted a social commodity (or income stream for the crooked) and started handing out blue checks in exchange for favors or IOUs. At peak, friends of friends of Twitter employees were brokering verification.

Sweeney went on to clarify that the current system from Elon Musk is not perfect either and that the ideal scenario is to have a system like the old Twitter had which worked on the basis of “meritocracy” rather than “elite” status.
