Erling Haaland risks Pep Guardiola wrath as Man City boss lets rip
Pep Guardiola was clearly far from impressed at Erling Haaland giving up his penalty duties to Ilkay Gundogan during Manchester City’s clash with Leeds only for the German midfielder to miss his spot kick. Guardiola’s side looked to once again be cruising to another three points after Gundogan’s brace in the first half.
Leeds had a few half chances, but City were in control of the match and should have wrapped things up when Phil Foden was fouled inside the box. Haaland would have been expected to take the spot kick, but the striker was seen giving his blessing to Gundogan taking it.
The midfielder, wearing the captain’s armband for the day, was looking to secure his hat-trick. But he struck his effort against the post with City unable to score from the rebound as Leeds cleared.
TV cameras immediately panned to Guardiola on the touchline, who was visbily agitated that Haaland didn’t take the penalty. “Erling, you have to take it!” Guardiola appeared to be shouting while wagging his finger.
And City were soon made to pay for the penalty fiasco as Rodrigo pulled one back for Leeds moments later. That set up a nervy final few minutes at the Etihad for the Premier League leaders.
Guardiola also gave Gundogan the cold shoulder when he brought the Germany international off before the end of the match. But City were able to hold on to their 2-1 lead as they moved four points clear of Arsenal in clinching their 10th-straight Premier League win.
