EU has an ‘advice’ for companies deploying generative AI tools – Times of India

The European Union (EU) has been at the forefront with respect to taking steps to curb disinformation by artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tools. Companies, including Google, Microsoft and Facebook-parent Meta Platforms, have signed up to the EU Code of Practice to tackle fake news. Now, European Commission deputy head Vera Jourova has advised tech giants rolling out the new technology tools for proper labelling of AI-generated content.
According to a report by news agency Reuters, Jourova said that companies should label content created by generative AI as part of their efforts to combat fake news.
Unveiled over the last few months, the tech world has seen the debt of various AI-powered tools, such as Open AI’s ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Bing Chat and Google’s Bard.

“Signatories who integrate generative AI into their services like Bingchat for Microsoft, Bard for Google should build in necessary safeguards that these services cannot be used by malicious actors to generate disinformation,” Jourova told a press conference.
As these tools became available to more people, concerns mounted about potential abuse of the technology. It is feared that bad actors may use it to produce far more disinformation than before.
“Signatories who have services with a potential to disseminate AI generated disinformation should in turn put in place technology to recognise such content and clearly label this to users,” she said.

EU Code of Practice
Jourova noted that the companies that have signed up to the EU Code of Practice to tackle disinformation should report on safeguards put in place to tackle this in July.
The EU Code of Practice sets the standards for developing responsible AI technology.
She also warned Twitter, which quit the Code last week, to expect more regulatory scrutiny.
“By leaving the Code, Twitter has attracted a lot of attention and its actions and compliance with EU law will be scrutinised vigorously and urgently,” Jourova said.
