Everton fans pelt Lucas Digne and Matty Cash with bottle and coins after Aston Villa goal
Aston Villa duo Lucas Digne and Matty Cash both hit the deck after they were struck by plastic bottles and coins while celebrating their side’s opener at Everton. The visitors took the lead right before the half-time whistle when Emiliano Buendia headed home Digne’s corner.
Toffees goalkeeper Jordan Pickford got a hand to the ball but couldn’t keep the Argentine’s glanced effort out.
But as Villa celebrated the goal by the cornerflag, the atmosphere in the stands turned toxic as objects rained down on Steven Gerrard’s players.
A series of plastic bottles, coins and lighters were thrown from the stands, hitting both Digne and Cash.
The two full-backs both went to ground in sync while clutching their heads in pain.
Neither needed tending too and were okay as they eventually jogged back to their half for the restart.
The guilty party in the crowd were labelled an “absolute disgrace” by BT Sport commentator Darren Fletcher.
At half-time, Jermain Jenas was also critical of the behaviour, particularly with young children in attendance.
“It’s becoming too often in the Premier League now, it’s disgusting,” Jenas said.
“Look at the state of that. We’re going back to the dark ages of football.
“There needs to be serious punishment handed out to all the clubs behaving in this way. They need to stamp it out now.”
BT Sport have since confirmed Merseyside Police and Everton are investigating the incident and are willing to come down hard on the perpetrators.
The Goodison Park stadium announcer also made it clear that bans would be handed out to any supporters found guilty of throwing objects onto the field of play.
