Everything we know about Tottenham’s manager search as Pochettino joins Chelsea

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is still searching for a new permanent boss nearly two months after sacking Antonio Conte. With fellow Premier League heavyweights Chelsea ending their own manager hunt by agreeing terms with Mauricio Pochettino, Spurs are under increasing pressure to avoid a repeat of their 2021 recruitment process, which ended in Nuno Espirito Santo’s disastrous reign. Here, Express Sport takes you through everything we know about the Lilywhites’ current situation…

Trio emerge as favourites

Although the situation is constantly shifting, three esteemed managers have surfaced as Levy’s front-runners. Arne Slot was dead against leaving Feyenoord until the Dutch league title was sewn up, and with it now in the bag, he is seen by bookmakers as the current favourite to take over.

Brendan Rodgers is also firmly in the frame after being sacked by Leicester City in April, and the Foxes’ continued struggles under replacement Dean Smith should only help his cause. The ex-Liverpool boss is said to be up for the challenge, should an offer materialise.

Finally, Brentford boss Thomas Frank is still linked to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Dane has been in charge of the Bees since 2018, but may jump at the chance to work with a larger budget, and for a club with loftier aspirations.

Key candidates drop out

Since Conte’s dismissal, each of Xabi Alonso, Vincent Kompany, Julian Nagelsmann and Pochettino have looked, at various points, to be edging towards the hotseat. However, none of them are currently thought to be in contention.

Kompany signed a new contract at Burnley earlier this month. Alonso, who has earned admirers due to his stellar work at Bayer Leverkusen, recently followed suit by confirming that he will be staying with the Bundesliga side next season.

Pochettino, meanwhile, was recently snapped up by Chelsea, and Nagelsmann provided the biggest twist of all as reports now indicate that Spurs have no plans to schedule talks with the axed Bayern Munich boss.

Ryan Mason stands a chance

Although against up-and-coming managers from across the continent, as well as experienced Premier League tacticians, Spurs will reportedly consider interim boss Mason for the full-time role.

The 31-year-old, who remains the youngest manager to ever take charge of a Premier League match, threw his hat into the ring straight after replacing interim predecessor Cristian Stellini last month by saying he is ‘ready’ for the job.

Although things have panned out poorly so far for Mason, with one win, one draw and two defeats from his first four matches in charge, he maintains a realistic chance of stepping up next campaign.

Levy under pressure

The Spurs chairman is already an unpopular figure with fans, while a repeat of his 2021 manager hunt would expose the club to fresh ridicule from rival supporters.

Missing out on both Pochettino and Nagelsmann – two options who would have gone down well with large sections of the fanbase – has only served to crank up the pressure on Levy as the recruitment process rumbles on.

And after a chaotic season in north London, the 61-year-old must match his managerial appointment with a compatible sporting director following Fabio Paratici’s sudden departure.
