Ex-Ranji player Nagaraju Budumuru poses as Andhra CM to dupe Mumbai company MD of Rs 12 lakh | Mumbai News – Times of India

MUMBAI: The Mumbai cyber police on Monday arrested former Ranji trophy player Nagaraju Budumuru in a case of vishing after he impersonated Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy and called a Mumbai-based managing director of an electronic shop chain asking for Rs12 lakh sponsorship for budding cricketer Ricky Bhui.
Budumuru is an MBA graduate and represented Andhra Pradesh in Ranji Trophy matches between 2014 and 2016. In 2021, he was arrested for impersonating personal secretary to minister KT Rama Rao and duped nine corporate firms to the tune of Rs 40 lakh. Budumuru has so far hoodwinked over 60 corporate houses to the tune of Rs 3 crore in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana since 2018.
Budumuru has confessed to have committed the offences. He said it all started as revenge after he was duped of Rs 15 lakh by a political party speaker in AP which ruined his cricketing career. The MD filed a complaint on January 13, two weeks after he learned that he was duped by Budumuru, who was earlier arrested by the Telangana and Hyderabad police for duping MDs of many corporate houses in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana by impersonating former cricketers and CMs of Karnataka and seeking sponsorships.
Budumuru cheated the Mumbai-based MD after convincing him that he is the current Andhra CM Reddy. He also used the CM’s photo as display picture on his mobile and asked the MD to arrange sponsorship amount in the name of National Cricket Academy. “I paid the money in the name of NCA and the accused sent the confirmation receipt on a fake letterhead issued by Andhra Pradesh Cricket Association and used fake WhatsApp number of the AP CM and fake email id of cricketer Bhui in whose name he sought sponsorship,” said the Mumbai-based MD in his complaint.
Budumuru has so far hoodwinked over 60 corporate houses to the tune of Rs 3 crore in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana since 2018. “There are at least 30 FIRs against him for crimes he committed using similar modus operandi,” DCP (Mumbai-Cyber) Balsing Rajput told TOI. Based on the complaint, joint commissioner of police (Mumbai-Crime) Lakhmi Gautam supervised DCP Rajput, who led a team of senior inspector Suvarna Shinde, sub-inspector Vijaykumar Ghorpade and cyber cops, and tracked the number Budumuru had used in the crime. Cops found that he had used genuine documents to procure the SIM to dupe victims in the name of AP CM. The team has managed to recover Rs7.7 lakh so far.
