‘Ex-WFI chief Brij Bhushan sought sexual favours in lieu of bearing medical expenses’ | More sports News – Times of India
NEW DELHI: A woman wrestler, among the six complainants who have filed separate FIRs against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, has testified that Singh sought sexual favours in lieu of bearing her medical expenses for the treatment of her injury.
This testimony by the complainant under section 164 of CrPC forms part of the Delhi police chargesheet, which runs into 1600 pages and has been placed before the Rouse Avenue District Court hearing the case, TOI has reliably learnt.
“On 19.09.2022, I played in the final of the (weight category withheld) against (name of the opponent and her country of origin withheld). I had suffered an injury which required proper treatment which would enable me to continue my future in wrestling. Upon my arrival in India, I was called to the office of the WFI at 21 Ashoka Road where I met the accused (read Singh) who told me that the federation is willing to bear the expenses for my treatment provided I gave in to his sexual advances. I completely refused,” the complainant, who is listed as Wrestler No. 2 in the chargesheet, alleged.
Another complainant, listed as Wrestler No. 6 in the chargesheet, accused Singh of offering to buy her protein supplements in exchange of sexual favours. “He used to ask me “mein kaisa lag raha tha aaj?”, “practice kaisi chal rahi hai”, “mereko bata dio agar kuch chahiye ho toh”, “tu mujhe apna hi samajh”. In November 2012, to further fulfill his sexual intentions, he tried to bribe me by offering to buy me supplements which I would require in exchange for sexual favours. “
While all the complainants reported alleged acts of sexual abuse on different occasions by Singh and his close aides, both domestically and on international tours, the wrestlers also accused the former WFI chief of threatening them by issuing show cause notices at his whim.
“His aides would call up wrestlers to meet him personally at the federation office alone, apologise (to Singh) or face serious consequences,” the complainants alleged.
Singh, on his part, told his investigators on May 6, 2023 at NPL Kingsway Camp here that he neither met female wrestlers alone at his official bungalow, which housed the WFI office, nor touched them inappropriately during national camps since the entire area was covered under CCTV.
The complainants, in their testimonies, also cast serious aspersions on the fairness of the probe conducted by the government-appointed six-member oversight committee, headed by MC Mary Kom.
“During the oversight committee hearings, the members said the alleged acts of the accused No. 1 (read Singh) were nothing but innocent acts done in good faith and that we were interpreting the same in a wrongful manner.”
