Explained: What is Lockdown Mode on iPhones and how it will work – Times of India
Lockdown Mode: What does it mean
According to Apple, Lockdown Mode offers an extreme level of security for certain users. Users will have the choice to turn it on and it is meant to stop even high-level security threats. Apple cited the example of Pegasus — a spying tool developed by Israel-based NSO Group. It has been alleged that many governments — including the Indian government —used Pegasus to target certain citizens. Lockdown mode will further secure the iPhone’s defences by strictly limiting certain functionalities. Lockdown mode will sharply reduce the attack surface that potentially could be exploited by highly targeted mercenary spyware like Pegasus.
How will Lockdown Mode work?
When Lockdown Mode is activated on an iPhone it will offer certain protections. For instance, in messages, most message attachment types other than images are blocked. Some features, like link previews, will also be disabled. When Lockdown Mode is on, certain incoming invitations and service requests, including FaceTime calls, are blocked if the user has not previously sent the initiator a call or request. Further, all wired connections with a computer or accessory are blocked when iPhone is locked. Apple said that configuration profiles will not be installed, and the device cannot enroll into mobile device management (MDM), while Lockdown Mode is turned on.
Who is Lockdown Mode meant for?
Apple clearly states that the vast majority of users will never be the victims of highly targeted cyberattacks. However, Lockdown Mode is an extreme, optional protection for the very small number of users “who face grave, targeted threats to their digital security.”
When will Lockdown Mode be made available?
The new feature will be made available with iOS 16, which is expected to arrive sometime in September or October later this year. Lockdown Mode will not be enabled by default but users will be able to activate it with a single tap.
Is Lockdown Mode meant only for iPhones?
No. Lockdown Mode will also be coming to iPads with iPadOS 16 and Macs with macOS Ventura.
