F1 fan left bleeding from Aus GP crash had debris stolen in ‘scramble’
F1 fan Will Street has admitted that he was unable to keep the large piece of debris from Kevin Magnussen’s car that left him bloodied after a “scramble” broke out behind him to grab the broken piece while he was still dealing with the aftermath of the incident. It proved to be a chaotic Australian Grand Prix both on and off the track on Sunday with fans invading the circuit while the race saw two red flags waved in the final few laps.
The first came after a bizarre crash involving Magnussen at Turn 2 when he clipped the wall and his right rear tyre completely tore off. While the tyre bounced back into the track, debris went flying into the air and over the safety fence.
Most spectators moved out of the way, but Street appeared unaware of the debris coming his way before it struck him in the arm, leaving him bleeding from the cut. Street appeared in good spirits while appearing on Australian TV to talk about the scary moment.
But he wasn’t able to keep the piece of debris that left him bloodied as others around him had already gotten their first. When asked on Sunrise whether he was able to keep the piece of debris, Street replied with a chuckle: “No.
“After it hit me I was obviously a bit confused and I was bleeding all over my partner’s nice rug. So I was busy dealing with that and there was a scramble behind me to get the bit.
“It was a bit of scrap metal probably about that big. I didn’t think to look for it. I thought it was quite small. When they held it up, I was quite surprised at how large it was but someone got it before me.”
Street was also under no illusion of how lucky he was to walk away with a cut on his arm and admitted that it could have been a lot worse. “Honestly I’m feeling pretty lucky,” he added.
“It ended up being not as serious as it could have been, the piece of debris was quite large. Standing right next to me was my fiancé and she’s a bit shorter than me. So where it hit me in the arm it probably would have hit her right in the head.
“Honestly I’m feeling pretty lucky it wasn’t worse.” Despite the scary incident, Street opted to stay in the same position for the final few laps of the race despite his partner’s pleas.
He added: “It was quite funny because after the accident with Kevin Magnussen my partner said: ‘Oh I don’t know if I feel safe standing here.’ And we convinced her to stay in the spot because it was great. And a couple of laps afterwards two Alpines managed to crash right in front of us again. I kind of lost the argument!”
