Fantasy Injury Updates: Latest news on Christian McCaffrey, Dalvin Cook, Nick Chubb, more affecting Week 6 RB rankings

Running backs Christian McCaffrey, Dalvin Cook, Nick Chubb, Chris Carson, and Damien Harris are all candidates to be “questionable” heading into Week 6, and with such a star-studded group of ball carriers, we should be paying close attention. There’s a potential for five handcuff running backs to fly up the Week 6 RB rankings, so the impact of each of their statuses could be significant. We have all the latest news — and how it could affect your fantasy start ’em, sit ’em decisions — in our latest round of injury updates.

WEEK 6 STANDARD RANKINGS:
Quarterback | Running back | Wide receiver | Tight end | D/ST | Kicker

Christian McCaffrey injury update

McCaffrey (hamstring) has been given a 50/50 shot to play against Minnesota in Week 6, per Matt Rhule. We’ll take his word for it and assume this could go either way. There’s not too much to say here, as McCaffrey is obviously going in your lineups if he plays.

If he’s out, Chuba Hubbard has strong RB2 consideration with RB1 upside. Last week, he received 29 touches for 134 yards and looked more than viable for fantasy. The Vikings’ defense seems to rounding into form, but with so many RBs banged up and some on a bye, you’ll likely be playing Hubbard if you have him and McCaffrey is out.

If CMC plays, we have him as our RB1 in standard and PPR leagues,

WEEK 6 PPR RANKINGS:
Quarterback | Running back | Wide receiver | Tight end | D/ST | Kicker

Dalvin Cook injury update

Cook (ankle) didn’t practice last week and was ultimately out in Week 5. However, he has taken the practice field already this week, so he’s obviously trending toward having a real shot to play. We’ll have to keep an eye out on injury reports later in the week, but he seems to be on the positive side of the “Q” tag for now heading into a game against Carolina.

The Panthers have been stout against the run with the exception of their game against the Cowboys, but Cook is a must-start when healthy, regardless of matchup. If he does play, there is a risk he’s in a limited role, though. That said, his upside outweighs the risk. He’s our RB9 in standard and PPR leagues. If he’s out, Alexander Mattison (if healthy) should go into your lineups and should be viewed as a flex consideration at worst. If both are out, Ameer Abdullah is slated to be the starter.

WEEK 6 FANTASY: Sleepers | Busts | Start ’em, sit ’em

Nick Chubb injury update

Chubb (calf) didn’t practice Wednesday, but neither did Kareem Hunt (wrist, knee) and a handful of other significant Browns’ offensive players. We’re assuming this is just a maintenance day, and both Chubb and Hunt will be ready to go, but their presence on the injury report is still worth watching. If one or the other does miss Week 6, obviously the active player should be in for a huge day against Arizona.

We don’t expect either to be inactive and rank Chubb as the RB10 in standard and RB13 in PPR. Hunt is our RB18 in standard and in PPR leagues.

Chris Carson injury update

Carson (neck) did not practice Wednesday, so for now, he looks to be on the wrong side of “questionable.” If he does, play, it’s tough to see a path to great fantasy success. The same goes for Alex Collins if he’s the starter. Geno Smith is starting for Seattle, and it’s tough to think Pittsburgh will respect him as a passer. Their front-seven should make life difficult for Smith behind a struggling Seahawks offensive line, and they’ll likely load the box, limiting Carson or Collins. We have both RBs in our Week 6 fantasy busts.

We know the RB position is scarce, so you might be forced to play Carson if he’s active. If he does play, we have him as the No. 25 RB in standard leagues and in PPR leagues. His floor is much lower than that, but at least he’ll have guaranteed volume, which is more than most backs below him in the rankings can say.

Damien Harris injury update

Harris (ribs) did not practice Wednesday after being ruled day-to-day earlier in the week. This will be another one we’ll have to watch throughout the week, but after a handful of fumbles this season, his fantasy arrow is pointing down even if he does suit up against Dallas. Expect Rhamondre Stevenson to get some work either way. Brandon Bolden remains the pass-catching back in New England.

For Week 6, Harris ranks as the RB24 in standard and RB28 in PPR. He’s another guy that has a lower floor, though. Given his fumbling issues and lack of usage in the passing game, sometimes a touchdown will be the only thing that will allow him to be a top-24 running back any given week.
