Fantasy Injury Updates: Latest news on Jimmy Garoppolo, Teddy Bridgewater affecting Week 5 waiver wire pickups

Jimmy Garoppolo and Teddy Bridgewater were knocked out of last week’s games, giving Trey Lance and Drew Lock opportunities to see extended playing time. Jimmy G looks like he’ll miss a few weeks, while Bridgewater could return as early as this week. Get the latest updates on their statuses and how Week 5 fantasy waiver pickups and QB rankings will be affected.

Jimmy Garoppolo injury update

It was a surprise when Trey Lance started the second half for the 49ers against Seattle, and it turned out to be due to a Jimmy G calf injury. We’re not sure what the severity of the injury is, but the initial thought is he could miss a few weeks. It looks like it’s time for Lance to take over the quarterback job, at least for a little bit. In one half, Trey Lance scored 20.38 fantasy points. Garoppolo has scored more than 20.38 points in just seven out of 35 regular-season starts for the 49ers. Even in an ugly game, Lance showed how his rushing floor and connection with dynamic 49ers playmakers can produce fantasy success.

We know his ceiling is sky high, but we’ll temper expectations a little bit and rank him as our QB19 in Week 5 against Arizona. For our money, he’s well worth a shot at upside in your starting lineup, but we’d like to see him produce outside of a garbage time (and a big touchdown on a badly broken coverage). Not that it needs to be said, but he’s certainly a solid option in superflex/two-QB leagues. Arizona will score a ton of points, so Lance will at minimum get garbage-time opportunities again. Make him a priority pickup in all fantasy leagues.

WEEK 5 STANDARD RANKINGS:
Quarterback | Running back | Wide receiver | Tight end | D/ST | Kicker

Teddy Bridgewater injury update

Bridgewater suffered a concussion in Week 5, leaving Drew Lock as the QB1 for Denver against Baltimore. Concussions are tough to predict, as the timeline to return can be anywhere from one to several weeks, so it’s a situation worth monitoring.

Whether Bridgewater or Lock starts, a date in Pittsburgh doesn’t look like a great time to play one of them. Yes, the Steelers look awful, but their defense it still much stronger than what we saw out of Denver’s offense in Week 4. We rank Bridgewater as the QB29 this week, and Lock will be somewhere around that spot if he starts. He’s not worth a waiver pickup this week even if he’s starting.
