Fast X Director Talks About ‘Emotional’ Unseen Paul Walker Footage From Fast Five

Fast X director Louis Leterrier has revealed how he felt after watching unseen Paul Walker footage from Fast Five. The director went through footage from the 2011 movie to create Fast X’s opening flashback scenes. He revealed that it was “really emotional” to see a young Paul Walker and Vin Diesel, not only in action but also in between the cuts.

The latest movie introduces Dante Reyes, the son of the villain from Fast Five. This means there is a direct link between both the movies. Hence, the scenes from Fast Five made sense as flashback scenes for the opening of Fast X. The opening offered Rayes’ perspective of how the events unfolded and why he is so focused to taking down Dom.

Louis Leterrier told Insider in an interview about how he reacted after watching the unseen footage of the late actor. He also talked about how the Fast Five chase was depicted through Reyes’ eyes where Dom and Brian are the “bad guys”.

Leterrier said, “So we reshot some stuff on 35-millimeter with the same cameras. We also went into the archives and looked at all the dailies.” He added, “So there was a lot of stuff that you haven’t seen before. We reinterpreted the chase through a different point of view, through the Reyes’ point of view, so Dom and Brian are the bad guys in our story at the beginning of the movie.”

The Fast X director also noted, “That was exciting. That was also very emotional because I was watching dailies with young Vin and young Paul and then obviously, they were Brian and Dom between ‘action and cut,’ but I could see their interaction as friends before and after.” Leterrier concluded by adding, “That was really amazing to see. Really, really emotional.”
