Federer receives classy retirement message from Wimbledon
Wimbledon have paid tribute to Roger Federer with a classy statement after the Swiss tennis legend announced his retirement from the sport at the age of 41. The eight-time Wimbledon winner said he would be leaving the sport at the Laver Cup, bringing an end to the former world No 1’s illustrious career and the organisers at SW19 have had their say on his exit from tennis.
The 20-time Grand Slam winner, who last triumphed at a Major at the Australian Open in 2018, has decided to leave the sport having been plagued by a knee injury over the past 18 months.
Federer will go down as one of tennis’ all-time greats after becoming the first male player to reach 20 Grand Slams before being overtaken by Rafael Nadal (22) and Novak Djokovic (21). He is the first of the ‘Big Three’ to announce their retirement from the sport after an era of dominance unmatched in men’s tennis.
And the organisers of the famous Wimbledon tournament paid a touching tribute to the Swiss player, describing it as a “privilege” to witness one of the greatest players in history perform on their courts.

Their message to Federer, posted on Twitter alongside an image of his triumph in 2017, read: “Roger, where do we begin?
“It’s been a privilege to witness your journey and see you become a champion in every sense of the word.
“We will so miss the sight of you gracing our courts, but all we can say for now is thank you, for the memories and joy you have given to so many.”
