Ferrari’s four candidates to replace Binotto including two F1 bosses
Frederic Vasseur
In terms of ticking boxes, Vasseur fulfils the criteria in almost every department for Ferrari. The Frenchman has vast experience of managing teams in F1 and is the current boss of the blended Alfa Romeo Sauber racing brand, where tangible progress has been made under his watch.
Vasseur has a working knowledge of Ferrari systems, having worked with a Ferrari engine for several years, and that could work as an advantage to reduce their reliability issues for 2023 and beyond. What’s more, he enjoys a solid relationship with their number one driver Charles Leclerc, having handed him his F1 debut in 2018.
Reports in France and Italy persist that the 54-year-old will succeed Binotto, but it would be a surprise to see Ferrari look outside their immediate organisation when the team are competing for honours.
Guenther Steiner
The Austrian boss of the Haas F1 team is known throughout the paddock for his no-nonsense, candid approach to issues within racing – and it could prove to be a breath of fresh air at Ferrari where proceedings are largely concealed and private.
Few could argue that Steiner has not deserved his shot at a big-time role in F1 after grafting away under Gene Haas for the better part of six years. Having began his career with Red Bull, Steiner possesses a wealth of experience and his track record of working with a difficult driver partnership means he could certainly handle Leclerc and Carlos Sainz.
Haas’ progress in 2022 from a pointless season to finishing eighth in the Constructors’ Championship- should not go unnoticed, although it seems Mekies and Vasseur are more likely at this stage.
