Field hockey most talked about sport on Twitter in India, Neeraj Chopra third most talked about athlete globally

Hockey was the most talked about Olympic sport on Twitter in India during the recently concluded Tokyo olympics, recording an increase of 134% compared to the Rio Olympics in 2016, Twitter said on Tuesday, releasing some data on the world’s biggest sporting event.

Twitter said the other sports that recorded a voluminous increase in conversations were javelin throw (+5631%) – India’s golden sport for the year, and golf (+703%) – with Aditi Ashok becoming the first Indian golfer to represent the country at the Olympics, and fencing (+1086%) – another new sport for India at the Olympics. Badminton, boxing and wrestling were the other talked about sports on the microblogging platform.

While Neeraj Chopra was the third most talked-about athlete globally after winning India’s first gold, the other most mentioned Indian Olympic athletes were Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, P V Sindhu, Lovlina Borgohain and Bajrang Punia.

The most tweeted hashtags on Twitter in India were Tokyo2020, Olympics, TeamIndia, NeerajChopra, Cheer4India and Gold.

The official Olympics handle’s video celebrating Neeraj Chopra’s iconic gold-win was the most watched Olympics video on Twitter in India.

Neeraj Chopra’s tweet expressing gratitude for the countryfolk’s support for his gold-winning Olympics journey was the most liked and retweeted tweet among Olympics conversations in India. This was also the tweet that received the most number of replies.

Twitter said while the Olympics have come to an end, the Paralympic Games are also gaining volumes of conversation on the platform especially with Indian paralympians such as Devendra Jhajharia winning medals at events.
