FIFA WC qualifiers: We respect Qatar, says Manvir Singh ahead of India’s clash vs Asian Champions

When India played against Qatar in 2019, they held the Asian Champions to a historic 0-0 draw in their backyard. India forward Manvir Singh’s performance in the match was lauded by everyone, including Sunil Chhetri, who missed the tie due to a high fever. Chhetri hailed Manvir as the future No 9 for India.

However, the preparation of India is far from ideal. Still, Manvir believes that the team will take inspiration from the draw against Asian champions Qatar in 2019 when they face the same opponents in the second-leg match of the joint World Cup and Asian Cup qualifiers in Doha on Thursday.

“We would like to impose a strong challenge for them. Although we respect Qatar, we don’t fear them. We have always been a strong team to play against, and we will try to do the same,” Manvir told IndiaToday. In from Doha.

The last encounter against Qatar changed the international career of Manvir. Before that match, the 25-year-old was never a regular starter for India, but the performance against Qatar made him a permanent feature in Igor Stimac’s team.

“Holding the reigning Asian champions at their home ground is something we’ll cherish for long. It was a terrific test for our character, and we are ready to face them again,” said Manvir.

Manvir had a great season with ATK Mohun Bagan, and the Premier League legend Alan Shearer appreciated his performance.

“Getting accolades feels great. But it also makes you more responsible, said Manvir.

India’s performance, however, has gone south since then while Qatar, the group toppers. Qatar has defeated Luxembourg (1-0) and Azerbaijan (2-1) and played out a 1-1 draw against Ireland in the international friendly matches in March. In contrast, India are coming into this match after a demoralising 0-6 drubbing against the UAE in an international friendly in March.

On top of that, India’s preparation has been hit hard as they had to cancel a national camp scheduled in early May in Kolkata due to Covid-19. However, on the positive side, Stimac will have the chance to field a full-strength Indian team after a long time with all the core players available for selection and without injury concern.

Qatar are ranked 58th in the FIFA chart against India’s 105th.

“Our preparations are going according to the plan. Coach has his plan, and he’s trying to fine-tune the team according to the same. We have got a huge responsibility to execute the same on the pitch and get the desired results,” said Manvir.

Sunil Chhetri’s return will surely boost the confidence of the young Indian side. Chhetri missed the two international friendlies in March, including the one against UAE, as he was recovering from Covid-19 infection.

“Sunil paaji brings in more energy and rhythm to the team. As a forward, my job becomes easier when you have someone like him beside you — be it shooting or providing an assist from, he always remains calm,” said Manvir on playing alongside his idol Sunil Chhetri.

“His commitment is exemplary and an inspiration for everyone,” he signed off.
