fifa: Why FIFA isn’t happy with this popular game developer – Times of India
EA Sports’ FIFA franchise has been one of the most popular games of all-time. It’s been running on for years and its popularity hasn’t dimmed at all. Credit to EA for building a solid franchise but it looks like FIFA, the governing body of football isn’t too happy with it.
FIFA issued a press release where it has said that how technology and mobile companies are now actively competing to be associated with FIFA, its platforms, and global tournaments. In the release, FIFA made it clear that it wants more than one developer to make gains from it. “FIFA is bullish and excited about the future in gaming and eSports for football, and it is clear that this needs to be a space that is occupied by more than one party controlling all rights.”
The “one party” FIFA refers to here is a direct hint at EA Sports, which is by far the most popular football game in the world.
EA Sports has a licensing deal with FIFA that allows it to use players’ names, team names and other things that make FIFA series so popular. Interestingly, EA Sports’ deal with FIFA is set to expire after the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. A report by The New York Times has revealed that talks between FIFA and EA Sports have stalled. FIFA, as per the report, is looking to double the cut it earns from FIFA. EA Sports too hinted that it may look for new names for its future football games, which does indicate all is not well between FIFA and EA.
FIFA also said that it is engaging with various industry players, including developers, investors and analysts, to build out a long-term view of the gaming and eSports. FIFA believes that gaming and eSports are the fastest-growing media verticals on the planet, with new and diverse types of games launching continuously. “It is therefore of crucial importance for FIFA and its stakeholders to maximise all future opportunities for football and gaming fans,” FIFA said in the release.
