fifa world cup 2022: FIFA is going to use technology to track footballers’ limbs, here’s why – Times of India

It is not a just comparison but just for the sake of the effect on the playing eleven and all those who are following the match, permit us to suggest that an offside in a football match can be perceived to be similar to a no-ball dismissal in cricket. One glorious (or a sinking) moment, a goal gets scored or a wicket gets taken and then to your dismay (or joy), it is declared that actually that particular goal or wicket does not count due to it being an offside/no-ball. Well, Fifa, the global governing body of the ‘beautiful game’ is looking to implement a new technology that tracks the limbs of players to correctly determine whether they are in the offside position at a particular moment in the game.
The organisation is trialling this tech starting from today in the 2021 Arab Cup. If everything is as per the standards and the tech pleases the governing body, then we could see it implemented in the next year’s World Cup, to be held in Qatar only.

The official name of the tech is “semi-automatic offside technology.” There will be a camera setup with over 10 cameras put at the roof of the stadium for the same. They will keep capturing the limb data of the players in the game and sending it to the match officials’ operating room, which would help keep a tab on the offside line as the match progresses in real-time.10 to 12 cameras can collect up to 29 data points for each player 50 times a second, as per a report by BBC.
Even with the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) technology, offsides can be hard to track, which is why Fifa is searching for new match tracking avenues. Let’s see how it goes for them with the limb tracking technology.
