Final 2021 table: Man Utd below Arsenal, MK Dons beat Tottenham, Newcastle down in 91st
Manchester United finished below Arsenal in a 2021 super table including all 92 sides in the Football League. United’s 3-1 victory over Burnley on Thursday night closed the curtain on football in England’s top four divisions for the year.
A table created by journalist Ben Mayhew detailed every single league game played in 2021 by clubs up and down the country, ranking them by points-per-game for league games only from January 1 to December 31.
Interestingly, clubs for this table were allowed to cross leagues. Therefore, teams who have struggled upon promotion – such as Norwich – found themselves high up the table due to their first half of 2021 being stellar as they romped to Championship promotion under Daniel Farke.
Unsurprisingly, Manchester City lead the way after continuing their incredible end to the 2020/21 season in the first half of this campaign. Their brilliant form has seen them win 36 of their 44 league games – with a total of 110 points giving them a points-per-game of 2.5.
They boasted the best goal difference of any team in the standings with an incredible +81 – and are also the top scorers with 113.
That is a long way ahead of second-placed Chelsea who, having won 24 of their 42 league games, gained a points-per-game (ppg) of 1.98.
Making up the top four are Liverpool and Arsenal.
The Anfield-based outfit are deserving of a spot in the top three and did well to take bronze in what was ultimately an injury-ravaged season for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
However, they are somewhat surprisingly joined by Arsenal – who amazingly finished just one point behind Liverpool throughout the year, with 77 and 76 points being earned respectively.
United finished in seventh behind Sutton and Sunderland, with their poor start to the current season costing them a place in the top four.
Meanwhile, the teams in the bottom three for the least amount of points accumulated over the course of the year were Bristol Rovers, Newcastle and Burnley.
Sean Dyche’s men are officially the worst team of the year, having won just seven games from 39 across the calendar year, amassing just 34 points from 39 games.
They are rivalled by Newcastle, who have just three points more than them, albeit having played three games more.
