Five Nights at Freddy’s Producer Wants to Turn More Games Into Horror Movies
The Five Nights at Freddy’s film is only the beginning, according to producer Jason Blum.
During an interview with Discussing Film, the celebrated horror producer revealed he can’t wait to adapt more games into horror movies. “I think the right video games make great source material for movies,” he said. “I mean, you saw that even with [The Super Mario Bros. Movie]. It’s a different genre, but it was an amazingly successful movie.”
Although it’s unlikely we’ll see a Blumhouse version of Luigi’s Mansion any time soon, video game adaptations are becoming increasingly popular, with Sonic the Hedgehog and The Super Mario Bros. Movie showing the appeal. “I certainly hope that’s the case [with Five Nights at Freddy’s],” Blum said.
More intriguingly, Blum now wants to dig into other popular game franchises to come up with the next big horror movie. “[Insidious director] James [Wan] is actually a big gamer and we have a games division of our company that we’ve been working on,” he revealed. “I’m definitely looking forward to finding more games that are popular and that we could turn into horror movies.”
They’ve already got one in mind, too: Dead by Daylight. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to work with Jason Blum and James Wan, two giants of the horror film industry, to further expand the Dead by Daylight universe,” said Behaviour’s executive vice president Stephen Mulrooney. “At Behaviour, our motto is to create unique moments, together, forever. Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are the ideal partners to craft Dead by Daylight’s killer entrance onto the big screen.”
Where could they go from there?
The Outlast series already feels like a found-footage horror flick just waiting to happen, and the now-iconic PT remains one of the creepiest video game experiences to date, even if it never did make it into a full-length game. Amnesia: The Bunker would put a WW1 spin on the classic monster movie. And EA’s Dead Space… well, why isn’t there a Dead Space movie already?
