Five players you never knew are playing in Turkish Super Lig alongs…

After an incredibly underwhelming spell at Everton, Dele Alli was loaned out to Turkish outfit Besiktas in hope of re-finding his mojo. The move has not worked out today, though he isn’t the only player to head to the Super Lig in hope of getting their career back on track.

Alli had the world at his feet after breaking into the Tottenham first team as a teenager. The playmaker formed an unstoppable front three with Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, earning himself comparisons to some of England’s all-time greats.

Though after several seasons, Alli began to struggle at Spurs, with Jose Mourinho publicly questioning the midfielder’s mentality during his time in north London. After it became clear that the midfielder had no future at Tottenham, Frank Lampard looked to prove his managerial worth by signing him at Everton – but that was a failed experiment.

A move abroad is a last chance for Alli to prove that he is not a failed talent. The 26-year-old is not alone in the Super Lig though and there will certainly be some familiar faces for the ex-Tottenham star. Express Sport takes a look at other players in the league.

Michy Batshuayi, (Fenerbahce)

Belgium international Michy Batshuayi has spent a significant amount of his career in the Premier League, enjoying spells at Chelsea and several at Crystal Palace. The striker was short of suitors over the summer though, with Fenerbahce signing the forward in the dying embers of the window.

Juan Mata (Galatasaray)

At 34, former Manchester United star Juan Mata appears set to see out his career in Turkey. The Spaniard penned a two-year contract with Galatasaray in the summer and has since made four appearances in the league, attempting to use his experience in and around the team to help the club in their title charge. Mata won numerous trophies during his time in England, including the Champions League, and his influence in the changing room certainly cannot be understated.

Nathan Redmond (Besiktas)

There are several familiar faces in Alli’s Besiktas side, from loanee Wout Weghorst to ex-Spurs forward Georges-Kevin N’Koudou. Though the most notable certainly would be former Southampton star Nathan Redmond, who made just one Premier League appearance last season. The winger is also struggling at Besiktas and has registered just one assist in eight appearances, though there is a feeling that he has shown the attitude to improve.

Steven Caulker (Fatih Karagumruk)

Former Liverpool and Southampton loanee Steven Caulker has spent three years in Turkey now and is playing for his fourth Super Lig club, joining Fatih Karagumruk over the summer. The defender – who now represents Sierra Leone despite coming through the England ranks – was a regular in the Premier League but his career quickly fizzled out, with a spell at Dundee not enough to get his career back on track. At 30, Caulker looks unlikely to return to one of the Big Six European leagues any time soon.

Federico Macheda (Ankaragucu)

A throwback to conclude the list, former Manchester United wonderkid Federico Macheda is looking to prove himself at Ankaragucu… aged 31. The Italian spent years out on loan but never truly failed to live up to the hype that his debut created – scoring a stunning last-minute winner against Aston Villa.

Macheda’s mentality has never truly been questioned, though Alli will certainly recognise how far the Italian striker has fallen, and how that could be him if he is not able to remotivate himself.
