‘Foolish’ Brian Harman admission ahead of final round of The Open sums him up

Brian Harman finds himself 18 holes away from ending his six-year wait for a victory, and his first major championship at The Open. Harman maintained his 36-hole lead in Saturday’s final round, after carding a solid two-under-par 69 to move to 12-under for the event.

He admits he would be “foolish” not to envision lifting the Claret Jug – and his admission sums up the fact he knows he is facing a date with destiny despite his efforts to remain ice-cool.

Heading into Sunday’s final 18, the American star holds a five-shot lead over second place Cameron Young, with Masters champion Jon Rahm one shot further back. Harman had a whole host of big names chasing him down on moving day but kept his cool to remain comfortable at the top.

Despite bogeying two of his first four holes, the American re-grouped and birdied the fifth, ninth, 12th, and 13th to regain his control of the tournament. He then finished with five solid pars to finish five ahead of Young, in a professional performance from The Open leader.

According to the record books, Harman is in good stead to get his hands at the Claret Jug with no player giving up a five-shot lead in the final round of a major since Jean Van de Velde at the 1999 British Open. The 36-year-old will be required to keep a steady head as he heads into the biggest 18 holes of his career on Sunday.

And as he has done all week, Harman gave a calm and collected response when quizzed on his thoughts heading into championship Sunday. Instead of running the thought of being the British Open leader into his head, the American is more focused on getting a good night’s sleep.

“Yeah, I’m not focused on it,” Harman said. “[I’m] Just going to try to get a good night’s sleep and get out and play a really nice 18 holes.”

In spite of his laissez-faire approach, the 36-year-old did admit it is hard not to envision the prospect of lidding the Claret Jug on Sunday.
