Four clubs Mount could join as Man Utd pull out leaving Chelsea career in limbo
Chelsea are resigned to selling Mason Mount this summer after learning that the academy graduate did not want to pen a contract extension with the club, though they aren’t keen to allow him to depart cheaply. Manchester United are currently in pole position to sign the England international, though they have threatened to walk away from negotiations if their recent £55million bid is not accepted, with Chelsea wanting £65m. Express Sport takes a look at four other clubs that could push for Mount if the Red Devils turn their attention to alternative targets…
Liverpool
Jurgen Klopp is desperate to rebuild his midfield at Anfield this summer, and Mount was previously cited as one of the players being heavily considered in Merseyside. Liverpool have already acquired the services of Alexis Mac Allister, and another versatile playmaker in the Reds’ midfield could be the next step required for the club to reclaim their status as title contenders.
Newcastle
The Magpies are set to battle it out with Tottenham for the signature of Leicester City star James Maddison, though Mount is certainly a viable alternative. Given the prospect of playing Champions League football and being the face of a new project, Newcastle will feel that they would have every chance of singing the playmaker if they did make a concrete approach.
Manchester City
With Declan Rice reportedly favouring a move to Arsenal this summer, Pep Guardiola could push for alternative targets at the Etihad Stadium if he feels he needs further depth in his midfield ranks. City could find themselves short of versatility amid rumours of Bernardo Silva wanting to depart, and Mount has enjoyed stints out on the wing with Chelsea previously. Ilkay Gundogan’s imminent move to Barcelona is likely to be resolved by the arrival of Mateo Kovacic, though another option for that role is not to be sniffed at.
