Four strikers Man Utd could still sign as Marcus Rashford threatens to aggravate crisis

Cody Gakpo

The Dutchman put up impressive numbers in the Eredivisie last season, bagging 12 goals and 13 assists in 27 matches. He has been linked with a move to the Premier League for some time and United could be the club to pull the trigger if they fork out his £35million price tag.

PSV boss Ruud van Nistelrooy – a cult hero at Old Trafford – won’t want to let his star player go but may face pressure from the Netherlands international if the Red Devils step up their pursuit. At 6ft 2in, the 23-year-old can feature out wide or through the middle if required.

Alvaro Morata

The Spaniard’s first Premier League stint, with Chelsea, didn’t go according to plan as he was sent on loan during his final season and shipped out permanently the following year. For that reason, signing Morata may not go down too well among United’s fanbase but he certainly has an eye-catching CV.

A return of 32 goals in 92 matches isn’t to be scoffed at from his past two years on loan at Juventus and having returned to parent club Atletico Madrid, they reportedly offered the Red Devils an opportunity to snap him up. The 29-year-old can also boast a stint at Real Madrid and a superb goal-scoring record for the Spanish national team, with whom he has earned 56 caps.

Quotes from the Mexican striker, affectionately known as ‘Chicharito’, raised eyebrows this week as he claimed he would return to United and play for free if needed. The 34-year-old veteran, who scored 59 goals in 157 matches for the Red Devils between 2010 and 2015, is currently scoring at a consistent rate with LA Galaxy in the MLS.

“Man, I mean, there are these situations and I know the narratives because of my age and my past,” he said. “If United came for me then I’d say ‘yes, I’ll play for free.’ Of course, you know, I’d do that.”
