Four transfers Chelsea need to make to avoid Graham Potter problem

Chelsea were taken over by Todd Boehly at the end of May, with the club since spending prodigious amounts of cash to rebuild their squad before sacking Thomas Tuchel. Graham Potter replaced Tuchel in September and will be under pressure to secure a top-four Premier League finish come the end of the campaign.

Potter was seen as a long-term replacement for his predecessor. But if Chelsea fail to cement their place in next season’s Champions League, Boehly may feel he has no alternative other than to relieve the ex-Brighton manager of his duties. And Express Sport takes a look at four transfers Chelsea need to make in January to ensure Boehly avoids his Potter problem.

Christopher Nkunku

Chelsea have been poor in front of goal once again this season and have only found the back of the net 27 times in 20 matches in all competitions. Summer signings Raheem Sterling and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have faltered in front of goal, with the likes of Mason Mount and Kai Havertz also coming up short time and time again.

RB Leipzig striker Christopher Nkunku could solve their attacking issues after impressing once again in the Bundesliga during the early part of the campaign. The 24-year-old bagged 35 goals and 20 assists in all competitions last season and has already found the back of the net 17 times this time around.

Boehly has already reportedly agreed to sign the player next year. And he could desperately attempt to complete the deal in January to give the west London giants a fighting chance of finishing the season strongly.

Martin Terrier

If Chelsea can’t get a deal for Nkunku over the line in the New Year, they could turn their attentions to Rennes forward Martin Terrier. The 25-year-old has scored eight Ligue 1 goals this season and has also added another three strikes in the Europa League to help his side secure their place in the play-off round.

Potter has already reportedly green-lighted a move for Terrier as he looks to bolster his attack. And if the player brings his current form to the Premier League, he could revolutionise the Blues.

Jose Gimenez

Chelsea have also endured problems at the back this season and haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last six matches in all competitions, despite signing defenders Kalidou Koulibaly, Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana over the summer.

And Potter is now said to be eyeing a January move for Atletico Madrid centre-back Jose Gimenez. The 25-year-old joined Atletico from Uruguayan team Danubio in 2013 and has gone on to star under Diego Simeone. But the Spanish team are in desperate need of cash after crashing out of the Champions League at the group stages. And if the Blues come in for Gimenez, Atletico may feel compelled to get a deal done.

Romeo Lavia

Southampton signed 18-year-old midfielder Romeo Lavia from Manchester City ahead of the new season. And the youngster starred in his side’s first five Premier League matches. He was then forced to miss eight league games with a hamstring injury but was handed a starting berth against Newcastle as soon as he returned to fitness. Potter is already looking to sign Lavia in January, according to reports, and is said to be making the transfer a priority.
