Citing two sources familiar with the matter, news agency Reuters reported that the Taiwanese original equipment maker resumed operations at its facility near Chennai as the area was hit by a severe cyclone.
It was also reported that Foxconn was undecided whether to resume production. The factory is said to employ about 35,000 people at its Tamil Nadu iPhone factory. The iPhone maker has rapidly expanded its presence in India by investing in manufacturing locations as Apple looks to shift some part of its production away from China due to geopolitical issues between the US and China.
The report also noted that this is the second time in recent months that Pegatron has been forced to shut its factory. Previously in September, it temporarily halted assembly of iPhones after a fire.
Several factories halt operations
Not only Foxconn and Pegatron, Hyundai also halted operations in the area as Cyclone Michaung wreaked havoc across Chennai and its neighbouring districts, causing disruptions in flights and trains. The publication also reported that several factories in and around Chennai have temporarily suspended operations.
“Considering the safety and well-being of our employees under the prevailing cyclonic conditions in Chennai and surrounding districts, the factory operation (all shifts) at Hyundai Motor India Sriperumbudur facility has been suspended for today (December 4, 2023),” a Hyundai Motor India spokesperson was quoted as saying.
Chennai airport closed
Cyclonic storm ‘Michaung’ inundated the city after heavy rainfall on December 4 and 5 in north-coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The Chennai airfield was also closed.
“Airfield closed for arrival and departure operations till 0900 hrs IST tomorrow due to adverse weather conditions”, said the Chennai airport authority in a post on ‘X’.
