It was not good news for World No.1 and former champion Ash Barty at the French Open on Thursday. The 2019 champion retired hurt during her second-round match against Poland’s Magda Linette at the Roland Garros.
Ash Barty showed signs of discomfort during her first-round match against Bernarda Pera. However, she managed to recover from a niggle and bea her American opponent in 3 sets to progress to the 2nd round.
However, on Thursday, Barty was not able to continue when she was training 1-6, 2-2 against Linette. She had entered the match with taping on her left thigh, having said earlier that she suffered a flare-up through her left hip during the weekend.
The top-seeded Australian called the trainer on court once again on Thursday after the first set, which she lost in just 27 minutes, hoping to be able to play on after receiving help.
Barty returned to Philippe Chatrier court after the medical timeout and played four more games before deciding she could no longer continue.
Notably, Bary was not able to defend her Roland Garros title in 2020 as she did not travel to Paris for the clay-court Grand Slam in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
