Fury gives reason for coming out of retirement ahead of Joshua bout

Tyson Fury has revealed why he has come out of retirement after stepping away from the ring in April. The Gypsy King believes he still has more to achieve and was getting bored of sitting at home doing nothing.

Very few people – boxing fans or not – were surprised when Fury announced he would be returning to action a few weeks ago. The Mancunian had toyed with the idea multiple times since his stoppage victory over Dillian Whyte and was always going to come back to finish off his legacy by attempting to become an undisputed champion.

Of course, those plans have momentarily been put on hold with Oleksandr Usyk out of action until next year. In the meantime, Fury has sent Anthony Joshua an official fight offer which has reportedly been accepted by promoter Eddie Hearn on AJ’s behalf.

Weighing in on his return to competition, Fury told Ring Magazine: “I got bored with retirement. I had five months out the ring, and I changed my mind. Nobody believed me anyway, did they? I would still have passed a lie detector test, though, for sure. I vacated The Ring title and I’ll now become a three-time Ring champion.”

“I was sitting at home for five months, doing talk shows and a bit of filming. It was great! But nothing will ever compare with being heavyweight champion of the world and having a bit of banter with the lads.

“And when I say the lads, I mean everyone else in boxing. I love boxing. I absolutely adore it. I’ve still got loads of time to do whatever I want. I’ll probably become the ‘New Mongoose’ (in tribute to the ‘Old Mongoose’, Archie Moore) and keep boxing at 50 years old (laughs).”

Fury looks likely to return to the ring on December 17 at the Principality Stadium (previously known as the Millennium Stadium) in Cardiff, Wales against Joshua in an all-British showdown for Fury’s WBC belt. According to Fury, the purse split will be 60/40 in his favour.
