Fury ‘should be embarrassed’ about Chisora fight says Ortiz

Tyson Fury has been torn apart by Luis Ortiz for choosing to face Derek Chisora next. The Cuban veteran has affirmed that he was willing to face Fury after the Anthony Joshua fight fell through but that The Gypsy King ‘passed on him’.

Ortiz is coming off a loss in his last outing to Andy Ruiz Jr on September 4 in a WBC semi-final eliminator bout. Despite the defeat, Ortiz is still ranked at No6 in the Ring Magazine rankings and is without a fight going forwards.

King Kong claims he was willing to step in on December 3 but that he was overlooked due to his recent defeat.

“I think even less of the big dosser Fury. He claims to want to fight the best. He says [Anthony] Joshua didn’t want to fight him, and that [Oleksandr] Usyk didn’t want to fight him. He went down the line of the top 10 on Boxrec and didn’t pick me because I came off a loss,” Ortiz told BoxingScene.com.

Fury and his promoter Frank Warren received a lot of criticism for choosing Chisora as the Mancunian’s next opponent, given that he has already beaten Del Boy twice in 2011 and 2014. Both bouts were convincing victories for Fury and since then the skill gap has only widened.

However, Warren states that Chisora was the best option available to them going off the BoxRec rankings. “BoxRec is the most respected independent rankings, number one is Usyk who we thought we were going to fight in December, but Usyk has pulled himself out. Anthony Joshua, we wasted a month on that, he’s out,” he told iD Boxing.

“Deontay Wilder’s number three, he just fought so he’s not available. Andy Ruiz is fighting Deontay Wilder in a final eliminator for the title. Then you’ve got Dillian Whyte who he’s just beat.

“Then you’ve got Joe Joyce who is not available because he only fought recently and he’s on holiday. Then you’ve got Luis Ortiz whom we couldn’t do anything with. Then you’ve got Joseph Parker who got beat by Joe Joyce and the next one at number nine is Derek Chisora.”
