Futurama Revival Comes to Hulu This July

Hulu has announced that Futurama Season 11 will drop its first episode on July 24, with new episodes released weekly every Monday.

The revival of the sci-fi animated comedy was announced last year, with Hulu ordering 20 episodes. The first ten episodes feature in the upcoming season, which is said to have a storyline that will appeal to both new viewers and long-time fans following decades-long mysteries.

According to the synopsis, there will be “developments in the epic love story of Fry and Leela, the mysterious contents of Nibbler’s litter box, the secret history of evil Robot Santa, and the whereabouts of Kif and Amy’s tadpoles.” There’s also a “pandemic in town as the crew explores the future of vaccines, bitcoin, cancel culture, and streaming TV.”

The original voice cast has returned for the revival, with Billy West, Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr, and David Herman all reprising their roles. John DiMaggio is also back as Bender despite a dispute over pay that was ultimately not settled.

Futurama first aired on Fox from 1999 to 2003. The series followed a pizza delivery boy named Fry, who was cryogenically frozen only to be defrosted in the year 3000. After its original run, four direct-to-DVD movies were released, leading to the show’s rebirth on Comedy Central.

The series is considered one of the best adult animated sitcoms in TV history, embracing the ridiculousness of sci-fi as well as its heart. Futurama paid respects to the classic sci-fi shows of its time, particularly Star Trek, but also forged its own path in the genre.
