Gary Lineker weighs in on Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo debate
Gary Lineker believes there is ‘no comparison’ in the age-old debate over whether Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo is the greatest player in the world. The argument has raged on for nearly two decades as the legendary pair continue to dominate European football.
Only one other player has won the Ballon d’Or in the years since Ronaldo, who in the summer completed an incredible return to Manchester United, earned his first in 2008.
Luka Modric was handed the gong in 2018 having enjoyed a successful year with both Real Madrid and Croatia.
Paris Saint-Germain forward Messi has won it six times while Ronaldo has one fewer.
Former Barcelona striker Lineker has tended to side with Messi in the debate, enraging fans of Ronaldo.
And in an interview with Marca, Lineker has once again given his take on the argument.

He continued: “They are two Argentines, it is true, but the reason [I love them] is easy: I love football and what they gave to the game, nobody has given it to them.
“Without comparing them, both did things that the rest of us mortals cannot even imagine. They gave us happiness.
“There were other greats, like the two Ronaldos, for example, but I consider them more as tremendous scorers.
“Diego and Leo did, and do, in each game, two or three things that neither I nor almost anyone did in an entire career. They play another sport.”
