Gary Neville explains why Man Utd coach should ‘gain strength’ from Ted Lasso nickname
Gary Neville has aimed criticism at Manchester United’s stars for their role in the Red Devils’ downfall – and has assured assistant coach Chris Armas that being compared to Ted Lasso is something he can ‘gain strength’ from.
Armas joined United in December following the appointment of Rangnick as manager just days earlier.
Since then United have failed to turn their fortunes around after sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for a run of poor results, and have won just two of their last five Premier League games.
Players have reportedly become doubtful of the abilities of Armas, giving him the derogatory nickname of Ted Lasso – a comedy sketch currently on Apple TV about a hapless American manager who takes control of an English side.
But pundit and former United star Neville has slammed the club’s players for doing so – believing the players to be ‘disrespectful’.
And the Bury-born figure has said Armas can ‘gain strength’ from the comparisons because he ‘doesn’t want to be on the same page’ as players who act in such a way.
“I thought that was downright disrespectful,” Nevile said on his podcast.
“I did not find it funny at all that they were describing Ralf Rangnick’s No 2 as Ted Lasso and not only was it disrespectful, but I found it disgusting.
“It sums up what I think of them: that they are disrespectful,” he continued.
“I think if I was Ralf Rangnick and his No 2, I would gain strength from that because I would not want to be on the same page of some of those players who are leaking those types of stories.
They take on Brighton at home on Tuesday evening before a trip away to Leeds on Sunday.
Rangnick’s men will be mindful that Atletico Madrid await them in the Champions League next week.
And if they cannot advance past the Spaniards, it is likely to be another trophyless season for the Old Trafford outfit.
