Genshin Impact Anime Rumoured to Be a Prequel Set Before the Archon War, to Have Multiple Seasons

Genshin Impact developer HoYoverse announced during the game’s Version 3.1 Special Programme that the game will officially become an anime. The devs are collaborating with animation studio Ufotable for the anime, in what they are calling a “long-term project”. A three-minute concept trailer was also released, showing off the art style and feel of the anime.

Genshin Impact players have always discussed how good an anime based on the game could be, considering the fact that the game itself is very anime. Now that we have official confirmation of a show in the works, speculation on what it could be about is rife.

There is a new rumour out there that suggests that the Genshin Impact anime will actually be a prequel, and take place before the events of the game. The rumour is from popular Chinese forum site NGA where a lot of online gaming discussion takes place.

The rumour comes from the HoYoverse marketing team and suggests that the anime will take place before the Traveler twins Lumine and Aether make it to Teyvat. It will focus one season on each of the seven nations, beginning with Mondstadt, which is also the game’s first region.

The anime will also show the end of the Archon war and the arrival of the twins – which is supposedly what’s shown in the concept trailer. It will show their adventures across Teyvat as well as the destruction brought upon the continent by Khaenri’ah 500 years ago. The anime will then bring us to the present time in the game where one of the twins wakes up and meets Paimon, and sets out on their own journey to find their twin.

Though this rumour is not considered reliable, it has still got Genshin Impact players excited.

It is also mentioned that the anime is in production for 18 months, and ¼ of 12 episodes are completed. This is based on the assumption that the anime will have multiple seasons and the first one will only focus on Mondstadt. The leaker has also said the anime has a “good” plot and “incredible” VFX – the latter would be hardly surprising since it’s Ufotable behind the show – known for anime giants such as Demon Slayer and the Fate series.

Genshin Impact is a very lore-heavy game, and many past events that have shaped the setting of the in-game world are frequently mentioned. Fan communities often discuss and theorise on these topics, and an entire long-term anime project taking its time to go through each region with several seasons planned is all a Genshin Impact fan could have asked for.
