Georginio Wijnaldum may have helped Liverpool find ideal transfer replacement for himself

Liverpool are looking to sign a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum this summer transfer window. And the Dutchman could have ended up helping his former club’s pursuit as he joins Paris Saint-Germain.

Liverpool are looking to press ahead with their search to sign a new midfielder after the departure of Wijnaldum.

The Netherlands international left after his contract expired in the summer and moved to Paris Saint-Germain to join up with Mauricio Pochettino.

There have been many targets on Jurgen Klopp’s list including Youri Tielemans, Saul Niguez and Nicolo Barella.

But one player that could have had his head turned is Frenkie de Jong – and Wijnaldum could have played a role.

Barcelona are looking to offload a number of players in the summer due to their financial troubles.

Several high-earners could leave including Antoine Griezmann, Phillipe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele.

But another that could be on his way out is De Jong – who joined from Ajax in 2019 and has become a big player for Los Cules.

However, the 24-year-old could find his future better suited to another club and Liverpool would happily take him on.

Wijnaldum is a huge player for Holland and is a big personality in the dressing room and many of his teammates listen to him.

The former Newcastle star is well-loved by Liverpool fans and that feeling is mutual too, so there is no doubt he would have been talking up the club over the Euro 2020 tournament.

With Barcelona looking to raise funds, if the Reds made a move for De Jong – they may not be able to reject it.

And with a newfound respect for the club, the midfielder could decide that a move to Anfield might be the best for him and his career.
