Ghostbuster Afterlife’s Director is Making a Movie About the Dawn of SNL

Ghostbusters: Afterlife director Jason Reitman is making a movie about the dawn of Saturday Night Live and the behind-the-scenes story of its premiere night.

According to Deadline, Reitman is helming the feature for Sony Pictures from a script he will co-write with his Ghostbusters: Afterlife collaborator Gil Kenan. The screenplay will detail the chaos leading up to SNL’s first broadcast on October 11, 1975, based on real-life accounts of the night.

The project will draw from interviews conducted by Reitman and Kenan with cast, writers, and crew members who were involved in SNL’s opening night, which was hosted by George Carlin on NBC, with Chevy Chase bellowing the first ever: “Live From New York, it’s Saturday Night!”

Reitman and Kenan are also currently in production on the follow-up to Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which Kenan is directing. The duo’s long-time partners Jason Blumenfeld and Erica Mills are producers on the sequel, due to hit theaters this December, and the untitled SNL feature.

Both Reitman and Kenan signed an overall producing deal with Sony after the release of Afterlife in 2021. The movie grossed $204 million worldwide against a production budget of $75 million, leading to the announcement of a sequel and an animated series at Netflix.
