Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Arrives This December
Netflix has announced that the long-awaited Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, will premiere on December 23. The first images and plot synopsis were also shared, revealing a little more about who the star-studded cast will be playing alongside Daniel Craig in his returning role as Benoit Blanc.
Glass Onion’s plot begins when tech billionaire Miles Bron (played by Edward Norton) invites a number of quirky and mysterious friends to his private island. It doesn’t take long before someone turns up dead, of course, and the group calls in Blanc to solve the case.
The first image released (below) shows the cast sitting around a dinner table, with Bron on one end and Blanc on the other. Also shown, though still playing unknown characters, are Dave Bautista, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr, Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, and Kate Hudson.
The following paragraphs feature spoilers for Knives Out.
These characters will bring out more of Blanc than fans saw in the first Knives Out according to writer and director Rian Johnson. “You definitely get to know him a little bit better,” he said. “In the first one, because of the way it was structured, Marta, Ana de Armas’ character, was very much the protagonist.
“In a big way, Blanc was the threat. He was almost the antagonist in terms of just the story structure, because you were worried, even as they got closer, that he was going to catch her and he was going to have to turn her over at the end.
“So Blanc was always outside of the sphere of our protagonist and was a little bit more of an enigma in the first movie. Whereas, in this one, Blanc gets an invitation to come to this murder mystery on this island. We’re very much meeting these people and getting into this world through his eyes.”
Netflix purchased two Knives Out sequels – so Glass Onion and an unannounced third film – back in January of this year for $450 million. Glass Onion’s official title was revealed in June but the sequel was first confirmed way back in February 2020 following rumours that Johnson was already working on a follow-up film.
In our 8/10 review of the first film, IGN said: “Knives Out is a crime thriller with its tongue placed firmly in cheek. From frame one, Rian Johnson and his cast are clearly having a blast, and that mix of comedy and mystery makes it a genuine crowd-pleaser.”
Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelancer. He’ll talk about The Witcher all day.
