Glass Onion Breaks Record as the Most-Streamed Movie in One Single Week

Benoit Blanc just made history.

According to Deadline, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery broke the Nielsen streaming record in the U.S. for the most-streamed movie in a week. During the film’s first full week on Netflix from December 26 to January 1, it brought in 2.89 billion minutes.

The total number of minutes streamed comes out to about 20.76 million full showings of the film, which runs at 139 minutes. Previously, Hocus Pocus 2 on Disney+ held the record with 2.73 billion minutes for its opening week.

Four other films have had at least 500 million minutes of viewing time: Netflix’s Matilda: The Musical, The Invitation, and Trolls, as well as Disney+’s Strange World.

Glass Onion, Rian Johnson’s sequel featuring Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc in a new mystery of murder and intrigue, pulled in rave reviews and solidified a promising new franchise of IP. IGN’s Rafael Motamayor praised the film, giving it a 9/10 rating and writing that it “improves upon virtually every aspect of its predecessor.”

The week of Glass Onion’s record-breaking streaming run also saw the massive popularity of a few television series. Prime Video’s Jack Ryan sat at the number 2 spot for the week with 1.665 billion minutes viewed, and Netflix’s Wednesday sat close behind with 1.66 billion minutes. The Witcher: Blood Origin also had a solid opening week with 912 million minutes, landing it at number 8 in Nielsen’s rankings.

Peacock’s beloved Kevin Costner series Yellowstone also made a jump during the week, pulling in over 1.04 billion minutes viewed; that’s an 84% jump from its previous week and the show’s first-ever billion-minute week.

Nielsen’s weekly streaming ratings have been recorded for a bit over two years now, but they only cover viewing on TV sets. It don’t include minutes watched on computers or mobile devices, and it only measures U.S. audiences.

Overall, it seems that American audiences tuned in to their favorite streaming services in droves during the last week of 2022.
