Glazers ‘promise’ Erik ten Hag that Man Utd will sign £51m keeper Andre Onana
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has reportedly been promised by the club’s Glazer family owners that Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana will move to Old Trafford this summer. The Red Devils are on the hunt for a new shot-stopper after David de Gea’s contract expired on Friday.
Onana spent seven years at Ajax, with five of those coming while Ten Hag was manager of the Dutch club. But the 27-year-old departed Holland last summer to sign for Inter.
The shot-stopper enjoyed an incredible maiden campaign in Italy and kept 19 clean sheets in 41 appearances. And Onana’s fine form helped his club reach the Champions League final, although they lost to Manchester City. He has now been tipped to link up with his former manager at Old Trafford this summer.
And, according to Corriere dello Sport, Ten Hag has been promised that the Cameroon international will arrive. Inter are under pressure to sell Onana in order to raise funds to bolster their squad elsewhere. And the Italian giants are demanding £51million for the ace.
United had imagined they would be able to sign the keeper for £34m and will find Inter’s valuation hard to reach immediately. But Inter are unwilling to even sit around the table with United chiefs for that lower figure, it is claimed.
And for that reason, the Serie A team are confident United will start the bidding at £43m, which will allow both parties to reach a compromise with the inclusion of add-ons to take the total amount nearer to £50m.
Ten Hag is searching for a game-changing goalkeeper after losing confidence in De Gea. According to the Daily Mail, the Dutchman is believed to have reservations about some of the Spaniard’s abilities, such as playing out from the back.
De Gea’s future at Old Trafford was put in jeopardy last week after United backed out of a new deal after the Spain international had already agreed to it. And on Friday night the club released a statement that read: “David De Gea’s contract is due to run out but discussions remain open with the long-serving keeper.”
De Gea has been asked not to join another club for now, while back-up shot-stopper Tom Heaton has also been denied a move to Premier League new-boys Luton as Ten Hag doesn’t want to leave himself exposed between the sticks.
Ten Hag will be looking to get the situation sorted as quickly as possible as preparations for the 2023/24 campaign continue. And he could well now be demanding that the Glazers keep their promise and give him the goalkeeper he wants.
