Global T20 Canada league to resume this year for third season

Following a three-year hiatus during the pandemic, the Canadian Men’s Global T20 tournament will resume in July this year. The tournament will be held in Brampton Sports Park and will continue for about two weeks.

Six franchises will be participating in the tournament and each team will have 16 sixteen players from full and associate nations, two international marquee players, three Canadian national team players, and three emerging Canadian cricketers.

There will be 25 matches over 18 days.

The first two editions of the Global T20 had cricketers like Chris Gayle, Yuvraj Singh, Lasith Malinga, Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, David Warner, Steve Smith, Brendon McCullum participate in the event. Wasim Akram, Brian Lara, and Mahela Jayawardene were mentors.

“With Canada regaining ODI status, Global T20 will work as a catalyst to kick start our campaign to realize our vision to be amongst the top associate nations,” said Rashpal Bajwa, president of Cricket Canada.

Cricket Canada is the official governing body for the sport of cricket in Canada. It is a not-for-profit organization recognized by the International Cricket Council and the Government of Canada.

While there has been astounding success of the Indian Premier League (IPL), various cricketing boards have tried to replicate the model with their own twenty-twenty (T20) format leagues, but they are yet to create a meaningful business model.

While there is no comparison with the IPL, Mint recently reported that viewership data of all the major leagues suggest that leagues including the Big Bash League (Australia), the newly launched SA T20 (South Africa), or Caribbean Premier League (West Indies) don’t come close to the local leagues, like the ones that play retired Indian cricketers.
