Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies took just sixty eight seconds to redeem himself in Canada’s second group game after missing the game-changing penalty against Belgium at the FIFA World Cup 2022 on Sunday. Giving Canada a flying start in its crucial Group F game against Luka Modric-led Croatia at the Khalifa International Stadium, Bayern Munich star Davies slotted home Canada’s first-ever goal of the FIFA World Cup.
Interestingly, the thumping header from Davies which managed to outfox Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic inside the first two minutes of the game, turned out to be the fastest goal of the Qatar World Cup. Latching onto a sublime cross from Tajon Buchanan in the 2nd minute, Davies’ opened the scoring for Canada as Modric-led Croatia conceded the first goal of the World Cup encounter in just 68 seconds.

The memorable strike from the Canada and Bayern Munich star is also the fastest goal scored by a nation in the group stage of the FIFA World Cup since 2014. Former United States of America (USA) international Clint Dempsey netted the fastest goal in a group stage of the FIFA World Cup during the 2014 edition of the FIFA World Cup. Dempsey netted the fastest goal after 29 seconds against Ghana at the FIFA World Cup 2014.
Before meeting Modric and Co. in Qatar, the Canadian side had suffered defeats in all of their previous four World Cup matches. Canada fired 22 shots in its FIFA World Cup 2022 opener against Eden Hazard-led Belgium. The Davies-starrer side suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Belgium in its tournament opener. Davies, who is the first Canadian man to score a goal at the World Cup, missed a penalty against Belgium on Thursday.
