Google brings “Material You” to Chromebooks with ChromeOS Canary – Times of India
It has been two years since the major “Material You” overhaul of Android, and the theming engine has made its way to a number of apps. Rumours were rife that ChromeOS would soon get the taste of Material You, and now it may be a matter of time before ChromeOS looks more like Android than ever.
A user, kentexcitebot aka Kent Duke, on Reddit shared some screenshots of what they say to be the ChromeOS Canary build, showing the colour and theme picker for the Material You engine of ChromeOS.
Material You unlocks personalisation on Chromebooks
The user says that the latest build of the ChromeOS Canary adds an internal flag, Jelly, which works similarly to the Material You theming engine of Android. When enabled, different SystemUI elements across ChromeOS dynamically adapt the wallpaper.
From the screenshots, it can be seen that the interface adapts the primary colour of the wallpaper and gives a few more colours to choose from.
Currently, it is being reported that enabling the flag is making the system crash upon users, suggesting that it still is in the early stages of development. So, it may take a while before the Material You on ChromeOS comes to everyone.
Meanwhile, in related news, Chrome for the desktop will also get the Material You soon. Currently, the theming option is available in the Canary build, taking the dominant colour out of the background you choose for the window and buttons.
