Google has been working on adding a built-in RSS reader into the Chrome browser for a while. The company introduced the RSS reader in Chrome for Android last year and a new development suggests that the feature may soon debut on desktop and ChromeOS.
About Chromebook has spotted the browser’s new feature in the source code of Chrome version 106. The source code mentions the term ‘Web Feed’ which clearly indicates that the company is planning to bring the RSS Reader with Chrome.
About Chromebook also contacted Google Chrome Engineer, Adriana Porter Felt about ‘Web Feed’ being related to the RSS Feed and she has confirmed the feature. She further added that the new Google Reader will be able to pull feeds even from the website that natively does not support RSS feed.
While there are several tools available that curate content from RSS feed-enabled websites. However, it is good to see that Google is planning to take things further by adding the ability to pull the feed from non-RSS compatible websites.
Considering the feature has been found within the source code of Chrome 106, we assume that it will arrive with the said version of the web browser and ChromeOS operating system which is expected to arrive in late September.
Felt has also mentioned that the mobile version of RSS Feed on Chrome is also due for some improvements before making its debut on the desktop.
The engineer also stated that the feature is a work-in-progress and that the mobile version needs to be improved before it will be ready on desktops. The target seems to be Chrome 106, which is set to be released in late September.
It is also important to note that Google Chrome’s RSS Reader tool is currently being tested in Chrome’s version 106 Dev Channel build along with ChromeOS Dev Channel. But, it is turned off by default and requires manual activation.
